The Newport High School Orchestra Program has earned a long-standing reputation as one of the finest high school orchestra programs in the Pacific Northwest. Many of our students are active in private lessons, youth symphonies and summer music programs. A number of these students are selected each year for the Washington All-State Orchestra and the All-Northwest Orchestra. Recently recognized on the national level, Newport Orchestra also had students selected for the All-National Honor Orchestra for the past three years.

In 2024, the Newport Chamber Orchestra recently traveled to Louisville, Kentucky as one of only twelve orchestras in the country invited to participate in the ASTA National Orchestra Festival. They also were selected to be a featured performer for the WMEA Convention in Yakima, Washington, where they combined with the Central Symphony to perform the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky. In 2023, the Newport Chamber Orchestra combined with Evergreen City Ballet to premiere Hansel and Gretel, choreographed by Jennifer Porter. They also traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, and performed at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in the World Strides Festival of Gold, where they received the highest scores of the day from all adjudicators.

The Newport Chamber Orchestra also combines with selected band members from Newport High School to perform as a full symphony orchestra known as The Newport Philharmonic. In 2022 the Newport Philharmonic collaborated with Evergreen City Ballet in their first production of Ballet Knights. In 2018, the Newport Philharmonic traveled to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the Capital Festival on Presidents’ Day. The Newport Philharmonic was invited to perform at the All-Northwest Music Educator’s Conference in 2017, and at the WMEA All-State Conference in 2016. The Newport Philharmonic also won the National Orchestra Cup at Lincoln Center in New York City in 2016, and in 2015 the Newport Chamber Orchestra placed 2nd at the National Orchestra Festival in Salt Lake City, UT.
